The area is traversed with the Equator at approximately 00 C and 310E at an altitude between 1200 and 1400 meters above sea level. It covers an area of between 328.34. Sq. Km 2 with a total population of 30,930 people. Mpigi district lies along the traffic routes that make up the trans-African highway that links Mombasa to Burundi, Rwanda, Eastern DRC and northern Tanzania. The thriving of prostitution in Mpigi like most towns located along the highway led to a high prevalence and incidence of HIV/AIDS in the community, parents died leaving their children to suffer, children were poorly fed, could not go to school, etc. Socio-Economic DescriptionMpigi district has a Tropical / Equatorial Climate and enjoys mean sunshine of approximately 220 C (720 F) with occasional bursts of rains. The road network is good; with the major road being the Kampala-Masaka high way, and a number of feeder roads, which are fairly maintained. Close to 80% of the people within the district are peasants, engaged in Subsistence agriculture, Horticulture, some Commercial farming and Fishing as the main sources of income. Main cash crops grown are coffee, vegetables, water melon, sweet potatoes. 15% are engaged in fishing and fish related activities. Mean while close to 5% engage in other sources of income in the area such as; Market vending, Retail shops and Public motor cycles as a means of transport. The main ethnic groups are Baganda, Banyarwanda, Banyankole, Bakiga and Baruli. InfrastructureThe Sub-county is traversed by the Kampala-Masaka highway. The highway is tarmac. The rest of the roads are murram, but passable even during the rainy season.A number of major roads and foot paths inter connect the district. There is accessibility to telephone services in the whole district and electricity in some parts of the district especially the trading centre and the parishes whose proximity to the main highway is close. Political InstitutionThe Resident district commisioner is the political head of the district. The Sub-county Council is the main decision making body. It is composed of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, directly elected Councilors, Women councilors, Councilor for people with disabilities, youth and the elderly. The Sub-county Chief is the head of the Civil service, which is responsible for the implementation of lawful decisions of the Council. Under the Sub-county chief, are the Sub-accountant, the Cashier, Parish chiefs, and the Technical team comprising of the veterinary and agricultural officer. |
